Have a Safe and Happy New Year!

Wish you could be in Times Square watching the ball drop at midnight? Well, you can! Sort of. You can log onto:

http://www.wi-fitv.com/index.php?page=livetv2&category=326&country=0&id=

and watch the ball drop online. You'll have to furnish your own hats and noisemakers and sadly, Dick Clark is unavailable, but the upgrade of the ball is said to be spectacular!

I hope 2008 is a great year for all of us!

Happy New Year to everyone!

Santa's Comin' to Town!

The other night, our power went off for no good reason--no storm or wind, nothing! We got the radio and put the batteries in after finding the rechargeable light and decided to listen to the station that was playing Christmas music. Then we began playing guess the singer. The only one I was unsure about was "Santa Baby" but I'm pretty sure it was Eartha Kitt. Imagine her singing:

Hey, I've been a good girl.....and all I want is a digital camera! ;)

Oh, the picture. I talked a friend into going to have our pictures made with Santa for our boyfriends/husbands who were spending some quality time with Uncle Sam (basic training) at the time. Yeah, sorry to say Santa sorta creeped me out after I sat down! I think he was enjoying it a tad too much! heh

Have yourselves a Merry little Christmas and remember the troops in your Christmas blessing!

K9 Lex Goes Home

Marine Cpl Dustin Lee had watched his mom work with rescue dogs while growing up so it was no surprise that he decided to work with K9 dogs when he joined the Marines.

He and his dog, Lex, searched for roadside bombs in Iraq. They were constantly together, even sleeping in the same sleeping bag sometimes. Nine months ago, Dustin was killed in a mortar attack in Fallujah and Lex was wounded. Whimpering from his pain he refused to leave Dustin's body and had to be pulled away.

Dustin's family decided to adopt Lex but the Marines said he had two more years of service and it took a NC congressman having a chat with the Marine Corp's top general to finally give the OK to the family. It is the first time anyone other than a former handler has been allowed to adopt.

Lex still has shraphel lodged in his back but has been working as a police dog on a base in Albany, GA, where the Lee family picked him up this morning to take him home to MS.

And that's the way it should be!

Night and Day

I heard what I think is a beautiful old song, Night and Day, played by an orchestra without the lyrics. I knew some of the lyrics and looked it up just for my own curiosity! They are:
Like the beat beat beat of the tom-tom
When the jungle shadows fall
Like the tick tick tock of the stately clock
As it stands against the wall
Like the drip drip drip of the raindrops
When the summer shower is through
So a voice within me keeps repeating you, you, you

Night and day, you are the one
Only you beneath the moon or under the sun
Whether near to me, or far
Its no matter darling where you are
I think of you

Day and night, night and day, why is it so
That this longing for you follows wherever I go
In the roaring traffics boom
In the silence of my lonely room
I think of you

Day and night, night and day
Under the hide of me
Theres an oh such a hungry yearning burning inside of me
And this torment wont be through
Until you let me spend my life making love to you

Day and night, night and day
Written by Cole Porter, said to be inspired while floating down the Nile River in Egypt listening to Moroccan drums and Islamic chants! (Think I'll overlook that!)

U2 has an updated version:

I'm not a Bono fan but I like the emotional punch he gives to it! It sometimes gives me chills when he first says night and day, but that's just me! I'd like to hear Sting do it! That might make me swoon----yeah, that's right....I said swoon! Well that, or a slow dance with Tom Selleck! Lawdy Miz Scarlett, I feel the vapers comin' on!

It's the kind of song that makes you want to close your eyes and dance like the incredible Fred and Ginger!

Anyway you play it or sing it, it's a beautiful song that I love.

December 11th

This used to be a special date. An anniversary of the day we picked to get married. It seems like November was the first choice and then we changed it.

My college roommate's dad was a photographer and he took the picture for the paper and when it came out in the paper it was placed next to my uncle's optician shop ad. My roommate was my only bridesmaid and after the wedding, two of my male cousins replaced my husband's shoes with a pair of bedroom shoes that looked like some wild animal's feet. Yeah, I should've posted the picture of me with my hand on my hip telling my cousins I wasn't leaving until they gave his shoes back to him! We had a stand-off in the foyer of the church before they were persuaded to return them so we could leave! They also chased us around Southside until we hid in a parking deck and waited for them to leave.

We were both on the verge of turning 23 and I'm not certain how convinced he was but I was sure we were getting married for life. Many years later after some major stress, we separated on Christmas Day several years ago.

So December has a black cloud over it for me. Where I used to love Christmas, now I count the days until it's over. I find it hard to be happy with so many painful memories. To drag myself through all the happiness, I try to concentrate on doing for others. I send care packages to deployed soldiers, pick a wish list off a tree in a store and whatever else I can. I'd be willing to bet that everyone does the same things we used to --- give our kids way too much! Shave a little off their lists and make a child who won't get much happy, or a soldier far from home feel he's not forgotten. Give a donation to one of the organizations that offer help like anysoldier.com, booksforsoldiers.com and many others. It isn't hard to find someone you can help have a better Christmas..... all you have to do is look!

Beauty Is Not Always Pretty

I guess most of you heard about Miss Puerto Rico-Universe's claim that someone put pepper spray in her make-up and clothing for the recent Miss Universe or miss somethingornother! There are so many contests--who can keep up?! It's still being investigated. But there might be a chance it was faked! I am not a fan of these shows and seldom watch these kind of contests. I used to watch Miss America but haven't watched that in a long time.

My only experience of anything like that was with our annual high school selection of class beauties known as the Beauty Walk. The lady that was in charge of the Miss Alabama contest picked 25 seniors by their class pictures and a group of officers from the nearby air base picked eight girls from that group.

My senior pix.

I was sitting in one of my classes when an announcement was made over the intercom about who had been picked and the details of the big event. Well, it was a big event for a fairly small town. My last name started with a W and I almost missed hearing it mentioned because I wasn't paying close attention. I was half-way hoping I wouldn't hear it, I think, 'cause that meant walking across the stage in the auditorium all by your lonesome! The only time I'd been on the stage was in a group and getting up in front of people made my legs shake and my stomach turn into a knot! My best friend was also mentioned and she was excited. I think I was feeling more terror than excitement! I didn't care for the feeling of being scruitinized.

I went home with the news that I'd need an evening gown and my mother didn't waste any time starting to make a very pretty aqua strapless dress. It had 2 layers of material and I was happy with it when I tried it on.

My hair was fairly long and I wanted to wear it up, so that meant a trip to a beauty shop and over an hour in a chair on the verge of tears from the pain! I was what was called "tender headed"! It required lots of hairpins and hairspray! And patience!

My best friend and I talked about our dresses and then came the rehearsal which was kind of fun. The only advice I remember was to smile. A few of the girls had been in some pagents and were used to this. I wasn't and as the day approached, butterflies were growing! As well as pressure!

When I came out of my room in my dress my daddy whistled at me. Bless his heart. We went to the school and I went to join my classmates while my parents went to the auditorium. I quickly found my best friend and joined in the nervous chatter. Then it was time to start. First the beginning of the alphabet and slowly but surely they got to the end of it and it was my turn! One of the boys from our class was helping us climb the stairs to the stage and then up a small platform. We had to stand there for a minute while we were announced and I heard this loud intake of air which made me want to back up! I'm sure they did that to all the girls. The auditorium was filled with parents, teachers, family and friends who had watched most of us grow up and I think we all looked pretty grown up that night! I walked down some steps to the stage, holding a boy's hand and then I was on my own! I had to walk from the center of the stage to the left and then all the way across! I was almost to the other side when I realized that my smile was moving on its own and just as I was about to make my escape from the stage I heard a little kid down front say, "Her lips are moving!" Thanks kid!

We all went back to the same room and someone came and called out 11 names to go meet the judges! I was in the group and when we got in the room something remarkable happened. It was like someone had flipped a switch and one of the girls, Dottie. became very animated and started flirting with the guys who were doing the judging! Dottie was a blonde--a natural white blonde-- who'd been in other pagents. Her name was Dorothy but she was known as Dottie. I can still see her walking in the halls with her books on one hip--she was the queen of the sashay! I don't think it was by accident, either! She had the swishing of hips down pat! She seemed to be doing okay with flirting, too! What a surprise--she was picked as top beauty! My best friend was one of the 8 which made me happy for her. I was an also ran! heh

Was Dottie the prettiest girl in our class? No, but her self-confidence and obvious flirting had convinced the judges that she was! I also suspect they were bamboozled by her blonde hair! Of course, it wasn't unusual for girls to date the airmen so there is a possibility that she knew one of them. Fair? Not exactly. And this was a kinder time!

Arizona Memorial, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

According to its architect, Alfred Preis, the design of the Memorial, "Wherein the structure sags in the center but stands strong and vigorous at the ends, expresses initial defeat and ultimate victory....The overall effect is one of serenity. Overtones of sadness have been omitted to permit the individual to contemplate his own personal responses...his innermost feelings."

Having seen the Arizona Memorial, I can tell you that it is beautiful as well as emotional to stand there and look down on the ship. Drops of oil still come up to the surface from it and when we were there, people were throwing wreaths of flowers over it. I think I am correct in saying that some soldiers are still being buried in the ship.

There are several sites you can find thru Google to read about the attack that awoke a sleeping giant. Natioal Geographic has a video from a news reel.

I was surprised to see my family name on the wall of soldiers who died on the Arizona and appears to have had a ship named for him. I was doing geneology but did not find out if we were related and stopped looking for a link several years ago.

Desparately Seeking Vision ;)

When I went to the eye clinic today I thought I would be getting a check-up on my right eye to be sure there was no infection or pressure problem. Silly me! Both eyes were super dilated with 5 different drops and three drs were prying my eyes open!

The drs said they could see slight improvement in the right eye and I did alittle better on the eye chart! Yay! Small but good! They said to give it about a month.

They said there was fluid in my left eye and it needed lazer surgery and a shot. Goody. They want me to come back in 3 weeks for that. We'll see.

I think I may have hurt or insulted the dr that gave me the shot. I jokingly asked him when he came in if he had any needles. He said it wasn't so bad, was it? I told him the q-tip in the eye was worse than the shot and he just looked at me. (Trust me, the q-tip was very uncomfortable!) He started to say he'd done it alot and no one had complained. Maybe they didn't want to hurt his feelings! He went on to compare it to a colonostophy and other procedures and I felt like saying okay, I get it. Necessary evils! He said he could give me a valium if I needed it but he usually doesn't have to. Was he calling me a wimp? I was so tempted to mention the fact that I'd had 2 kids, one by c-section so I've had my share of needles, pain, etc,  but I didn't. Touchy, touchy!

I found out alittle info on Dr India. She spelled her name but I'm not going to list in for google to capture it! The tech said she was like a super smart student and is 6 yrs younger than the other drs, sweet but immature. She seems to have adopted me as her patient. If she gets too blunt again, I might have to give her a clue!

Driving home was a nightmare with the sun blinding me at times! And just before I was home the car started shaking! I have no idea what is wrong with it but was glad to make it home!
